Hiking Madrid Bunker Cruz Gallega Inside

The name comes from the seasonal “gallegos” workers, especially shearers. In this area there is an unusual concentration of bunkers built by the rebel forces during the Civil War to protect access to Segovia from the attack of the Republicans.

This is one of the best routes to explain some of the chapters of the Spanish Civil War, specially the battle of La Granja for the conquer by the Republicans of Segovia in Franco’s hands. described by Hemingway’s famous book “For whom bells toll” centred in the La Granja battle, one episode which happened during the months of May – June 1937. Bunquers, trenches, part of the “Camino del Madrid” from La Fuenfría Pass, the main pilgrim way to Santiago from Madrid and orientation where some of the objectives in this lovely walk.

Access from Madrid is produced either by the passage of Navacerrada or by the  Fuenfría pass, but both converge on this point. Therefore another attraction of this route is that partially runs along the Camino de Madrid, The way to Santiago de Compostela from the Capital.

The Cerro de Matabueyes Forest and the Palace built by Philip II in Valsaín are other attractions of this route.

Hiking Madrid Cruz Gallega Bunkers Route

Esta estupenda ruta recorre uno de los más hermosos entornos de la Sierra de Guadarrama.

El nombre procede de los numerosos trabajadores temporeros gallegos, especialmente esquiladores. En éste área existe una concentración inusual de búnkeres construidos por las fuerzas sublevadas durante la Guerra Civil, para proteger el acceso a Segovia del ataque de los republicanos.

El acceso desde Madrid se producía o bien por el paso del Puerto de Navacerrada o bien por el paso de La Fuenfría, pero ambos convergen en este punto. Por ello otra de las atracciones de esta ruta es que parcialmente recorre el Camino de Madrid, acceso a Santiago de Compostela desde la Capital.

El Cerro de Matabueyes y el Palacio del Bosque construido por Felipe II, en Valsaín son otras de las atracciones de esta ruta.
